Iyer’s talent He has been rated very highly in Mumbai Cricket

Virat Kohli is not going to take part in the upcoming ODI series against Sri Lanka as he has been given a short break ahead of the overseas tours coming up and on his place, the young Mumbai batsman Shreyas Iyer has been in included in the Indian side.

Iyer may bat at no. 3 in Kohli’s absence and it will be an opportunity for him to present his case strongly as an ODI player. He has played Cricket for India in the past, but in T20 format only. This is the first time he is going to feature for the national team in 50-over Cricket.

There are a couple of spots up for grabs in the Indian ODI team at the moment and if Iyer does well batting at 3 or wherever he is slotted at by the team management, he can cement his place in the side.

Nobody has any doubts about Iyer’s talent He has been rated very highly in Mumbai Cricket and has played some of the most extraordinary innings that one can ever see in first class Cricket, but his lack of patience is something which at times proves to be his real weakness.

He likes to go all out every time he walks onto the pitch which is fine from T20 Cricket point of view, but in ODI Cricket, such approach doesn’t work all the time because it’s a 50-over game and you need to pace your innings by rotating the strike as well apart from playing the shots. That’s something that he will have to understand because if he scores a sparkling 30 or a 40, that won’t do any good neither to him personally nor to the team. He will have to remain patient and focus on scoring hundreds especially if he plays at 3.
