AUSTRALIA has clawed back some credibility after a disastrous Test campaign by securing the one-day series with an emphatic win in the fifth match at the Gabba.
Jeers turned to cheers as Michael Clarke snapped a horror run with the bat to inspire the win.
Despite Chris Woakes (6-45) grabbing the second-best one-day figures ever by an Englishman in only his second ODI, stand-in skipper Clarke (54) was the man of the moment after Australia’s 51-run victory.
Only late hitting by Steve Finn (35) and James Anderson (20 not out) in a 53-run 10th wicket stand helped England reach 198 before they were bowled out in the 46th over in reply to Australia’s 249.
Shane Watson took 3-25.
The woefully out of nick Clarke was savagely booed when he took the crease as he felt the heat for a lean summer which included just 70 runs from four ODIs at 17.50 this series.
