The captain of the Sri Lankan cricket team, Mahela Jayawardena, has said that the final match of the World T20 Championship is going to be played between Sri Lanka and West Indies and not between Sri Lanka and Chris Gayle.
Jayawardena gave this statement when he was asked numerous questions about Chris Gayle in the press conference ahead of the final match on Saturday evening.
The reporters were asking a number of questions about Chris Gayle and the Sri Lankan captain got pissed off. He said, “We are going to compete against the whole West Indies team. It’s not only about Chris Gayle. Yes, he is a powerful striker of the ball and he is batting pretty well at the moment, but, it doesn’t mean that we concentrate only on him.”
Gayle had played a blistering knock of 75 runs off just 41 runs in the semi final match against Australia on Friday. He was named as the man of the match for that knock. In the post match presentation ceremony, Gayle said, “I am getting Vibes that West Indies is going to win the title. We are performing brilliantly in all the three departments of the game and it will be quite hard for Sri Lanka to stop us.”
Gayle batted for full 20 overs against Australia and remained not out. When asked whether it was his plan to bat through the innings or it just happens, Gayle said, “It was not a plan. I didn’t want to take risk against some of their key bowlers. I was waiting for the slower bowlers to come into the attack. That’s why, I was a bit cautious at the start.”
“But, the credit goes to other boys as well. Samuels and Bravo batted really well and took the pressure off me.”
Later on, Chris Gayle wrote on his Twitter account, “Sorry Sri Lanka, we are going to win the title.”
When asked about that tweet, Jayawardena said, “It seems that Chris Gayle is a bit nervous. That’s why he is tweeting like this.”
The final match of the World T20 Championship is going to be played on Sunday at R Premadasa Stadium.
